Complex visual hallucinations triggered by eye closure and condition-specific release phenomenon

چکیده
The pathogenesis of complex visual hallucination by suppression of inhibitory cortical input to visual association areas is considered as the “release phenomenon”. A 79 year-old man without dementia or hallucinations history experienced complex visual hallucinations in the right lower quadrantanopia area after traumatic subdural hematoma (SDH) of the left occipital region. The vivid hallucinations were only triggered only by eye closure. Serial Tc99m single photon emission computed tomography studies were performed to explore the phenomenon. By semi-quantitative measurement of the parietal-occipital region in three different settings, we suggested that hyperperfusion in the left parieto-occipital region was related to hallucination during eye closure. In conclusions, release phenomenon in lesions that caused dysregulation between external perception and internal image production may be one possible mechanism in triggering visual hallucinations during eye closure.

Complex visual hallucinations in a blinded visual field are an under-appreciated phenomenon. Both a stimulating phenomenon and a release phenomenon have been suggested as explanations for these hallucinations. However, the mechanisms of complex visual hallucinations in patients with visual field defects due to intracranial diseases are still controversial. A patient with complex visual hallucin...

Complex visual hallucinations may affect some normal individuals on going to sleep and are also seen in pathological states, often in association with a sleep disturbance. The content of these hallucinations is striking and relatively stereotyped, often involving animals and human figures in bright colours and dramatic settings. Conditions causing these hallucinations include narcolepsy-cataple...
متن کاملVision loss and visual hallucinations: the Charles Bonnet syndrome
Around half the people presenting with acquired severe sight loss will at some point experience visual hallucinations. This is a little-known fact, not only amongst patients, but also amongst a significant number of health and eye care professionals. The condition is known as Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS) and is named after the naturalist who first described this phenomenon in 1759. Although vi...

LSD use in certain individuals may result in chronic visual hallucinations, a DSM-IV syndrome known as hallucinogen persisting perception disorder (HPPD). We studied 38 HPPD subjects with a mean of 9.7 years of persistent visual hallucinations and 33 control subjects. Measures of local and medium distance EEG spectral coherence were calculated from all subjects. Coherence, a measure of spectral...
